Political Risk Briefing
July 17, 2025
Brampton, Ontario
As Tamil Canadians, we continue to seek
justice for the genocide, atrocities and crimes against humanity committed in
our homeland. This enduring struggle has shaped the lives of generations and
influenced the migration of many, including the parents of the Honourable Gary
Anandasangaree.
From a young age, Mr. Anandasangaree
demonstrated a deep commitment to justice and public service. Over the years,
he has emerged as a principled and dedicated leader within the Tamil Canadian
community. His unwavering advocacy for human rights, equity, and democratic
values has not only united our community but also amplified its voice on both
national and international platforms.
Through his legal work, community activism,
and political leadership, Mr. Anandasangaree has played a pivotal role in
strengthening the social, cultural, and economic contributions of Tamil
Canadians. His journey—from a refugee child to a federal cabinet
minister—stands as a powerful testament to the resilience of our people and the
inclusive promise of Canada.
More than a public servant, Mr.
Anandasangaree is a role model for Tamils in Canada and around the world. His
story inspires hope, affirms our identity, and strengthens our collective
resolve to continue the pursuit of justice, dignity, and peace.
We honour him not only for his
accomplishments but for the values he embodies: integrity, compassion, and
courage.

International Representation and Community Response
In 2019, as a sitting Member of Parliament,
Gary Anandasangaree delivered a statement at the United Nations Human Rights
Council (UNHRC) in Geneva. He was part of Canada’s official delegation and
addressed the Council on issues related to human rights and accountability in
Sri Lanka.
At the time, Canada had not yet officially recognized the Tamil Genocide—a
recognition that would only come in May 2022. As a result, Mr. Anandasangaree,
despite his personal and community ties, did not use the term “genocide” in his
statement, nor did he explicitly identify the victims as Tamils. This decision
was made in alignment with Canada’s official foreign policy and diplomatic
position at the time.
His remarks, though diplomatically measured, sparked a significant outcry
within the global Tamil diaspora, many of whom felt that the omission of key
terms diminished the gravity of their historical trauma. Despite the
reputational risks and political consequences, he stood by Canada’s official
position, demonstrating a deep commitment to the principles of the rule of law,
diplomatic integrity, and public service. His actions at the UNHRC reflected
the difficult balance between personal conviction and national
representation—an act that many now view as a defining moment in his political
career.
Editor's Note:
In times of heightened scrutiny, Canadians need to stand united in support of principled leadership. We call on all Canadians
to support the Honourable Gary Anandasangaree and Prime Minister Mark Carney in
their continued efforts to uphold justice, transparency, and democratic values.
