JAFFNA, SRI LANKA — Forensic teams at the Chemmani mass‑grave site have confirmed the recovery of approximately 245 sets of human remains during excavations conducted in late April and early May 2026. The operation, carried out under the supervision of the Jaffna Magistrate, has intensified calls for transparent forensic processing, DNA identification, and independent oversight.

Investigators report that several newly uncovered skeletons show signs of severe trauma, and at least two sets of remains are believed to be children. Personal items — including infant feeding bottles, toys, shoes, and bags — were also recovered, underscoring the humanitarian urgency of identification and family notification.

Tamil diaspora communities across Canada, the UK, Europe, and Australia have expressed deep concern, calling the discovery a critical moment in the long struggle for truth, justice, and accountability for wartime disappearances.

Diaspora Concerns

  • Need for independent international forensic experts
  • Completion of a comprehensive GPR survey
  • Transparent chain‑of‑custody procedures
  • Accelerated DNA identification and family reference sample collection
  • Regular public updates and access for observers

Call to the International Community

Diaspora organizations urge immediate engagement with UN Special Procedures, including:

  • SR on Extrajudicial Executions (Minnesota Protocol)
  • WGEID (case registration and family rights)
  • SR on Truth, Justice, Reparation (impunity and accountability gaps)

“This is not just an excavation — it is a turning point in the global Tamil community’s pursuit of truth and justice.”
