CHENNAI — A wave of misleading headlines recently swept through national media, erroneously claiming that Tamil Nadu's newly sworn-in Chief Minister, C. Joseph Vijay, paid a direct tribute to LTTE founder Velupillai Prabhakaran. News outlets, including India Today, published headlines such as "Vijay pays tribute to LTTE chief Prabhakaran". This framing ignited a political firestorm, with opposition parties using the distorted narrative to attack the newly formed TVK-Congress coalition government.

However, a closer look at the Chief Minister's actual statement reveals a profound misrepresentation by the press. The media conflated the date of the remembrance—May 18, which marks the end of the Sri Lankan Civil War and the death of Prabhakaran—with the subject of the Chief Minister's tribute. Rather than endorsing a banned militant leader, the Chief Minister was observing Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day, a solemn occasion recognizing the tens of thousands of Tamil civilians who lost their lives during the final stages of the conflict in 2009.

The Actual Message

On May 18, 2026, Chief Minister Vijay posted the following message on the social media platform 'X':

"Let us hold the memories of Mullivaikkal in our hearts. We will always stand by the rights of our Tamil kindred living across the seas."

Another translation of the same post reads:

"We will carry the memories of Mullivaikkal in our hearts! We will always stand in solidarity for the rights of our Tamil kin living across the sea!"

Interpreting the Message

The Chief Minister’s statement is firmly rooted in humanitarianism and ethnic solidarity, not militancy. By invoking "the memories of Mullivaikkal," Vijay is acknowledging the immense suffering and the tragic loss of civilian life—estimated by the UN to be between 40,000 and 70,000 casualties—that occurred in the small coastal village of Mullivaikkal. His pledge to "stand in solidarity for the rights of our Tamil kin" signals that his administration will be a vocal advocate for the democratic rights, dignity, and rehabilitation of the global Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora. The message is a peaceful affirmation of kinship, carefully designed to respect international human rights while avoiding the endorsement of armed extremism.

A Call to Action: Moving from Solidarity to Justice

While the Chief Minister’s message of solidarity is a welcome step, true justice for the victims of Mullivaikkal requires concrete political and diplomatic action.

To Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay:

We respectfully urge your administration to go beyond remembrance and formally recognize the atrocities committed against Eelam Tamils as a Genocide. Acknowledging the systemic nature of the violence is the first step toward healing. Furthermore, it is vital to recognize the ongoing structural oppression and "internal colonialism" faced by Tamils in their historic homelands. We request that the Tamil Nadu government use its political leverage to actively support the social, political, and land rights of Eelam Tamils, ensuring their voices are amplified on the global stage.

To the Government of India:

India occupies a uniquely powerful position in South Asia and possesses the geopolitical influence to demand accountability. We urge the Indian government to abandon its passive stance and actively champion international justice mechanisms. Specifically, India must advocate for and support the referral of the Sri Lankan state's actions to the International Criminal Court (ICC), the International Court of Justice (ICJ), or back the establishment of an independent International Tribunal. The victims of Mullivaikkal have waited over a decade and a half for truth and accountability; India must lead the charge to ensure that the perpetrators of these mass atrocities are finally held responsible under international law.
